MB&F-the origin of the concept laboratory
MB&F copy was established in 2005 and is the world’s first watch concept laboratory. MB&F relies on nearly 20 outstanding movements to form the foundation of the acclaimed Horological and Legacy Machines (watches and traditional machines), and continues to follow the vision of the founder and creative director Maximilian Büsser to create 3D dynamics by disrupting traditional watchmaking techniques art.
After running the famous watch brand for 15 years, Maximilian Büsser resigned from his position as managing director at Harry Winston in 2005 and founded MB&F-Maximilian Büsser & Friends. MB&F is an art and micro-engineering laboratory dedicated to bringing together talented watch professionals who are respected and willing to cooperate in Bissell to design and produce a series of radical concept watches.
In 2007, MB&F launched the first watch machine HM1. The engraved three-dimensional case of the HM1 and the exquisite engine (movement) set the standard for the subsequent special watch machinery-all machinery is time, not machinery. The watch machine explored space (HM2, HM3, HM6), sky (HM4, HM9), roads (HM5, HMX, HM8) and animal kingdom (HM7, HM10).
In 2011, MB&F launched the round box Legacy Machine series. These more classic works-MB&F’s classic works-pay tribute to the 19th century watchmaking industry by reinterpreting the complexity of the great watch innovators of the past to create contemporary artworks. LM1 and LM2 are followed by LM101, which is the first MB&F machine with a movement developed entirely in-house. LM Perpetual, LM Split Escapement and LM Thunderdome further expand the product range. 2019 marked a turning point with the creation of the first female-only MB&F machine: LM FlyingT. MB&F usually alternates between the release of contemporary, absolutely unconventional watch machines and traditional machines inspired by history.
Because F stands for Friends, it is natural for MB&F to collaborate with artists, watchmakers, designers and manufacturers they admire.
This brings two new categories: performing arts and co-creation. Performance art works are MB&F machines revisited by external creative talents, and co-creation is not a watch, but other types of machines designed and manufactured by a unique Swiss manufacturer uniquely conceived and designed by MB&F. Many of these co-creations, such as the clock created by L’Epée 1839, illustrate the time when other forms of mechanical art were produced in collaboration with Reuge and Caran d’Ache. In order to provide a suitable platform for all these machines, Büsser’s idea is to put them together with various forms of mechanical art created by other artists in art galleries, rather than in traditional storefronts. This led to the creation of the first MB&F M.A.D. Gallery (M.A.D. stands for Mechanical Art Equipment) in Geneva, followed by the opening of M.A.D. Galleries in Taipei, Dubai and Hong Kong.
So far, the outstanding praise reminds us of the innovative nature of the MB&F journey. To name a few, the famous Geneva Watch Awards has won no less than 5 awards: In 2019, the Best Ladies Complication Award was awarded to LM FlyingT. In 2016, LM Perpetual won the Best Calendar Viewing Award; in 2012, Legacy Machine No.1 won both the public award (selected by a vote of watch fans) and the Best Men’s Watch Award (selected by a professional jury). In 2010, MB&F won the best concept and design watch with HM4 Thunderbolt. In 2015, MB&F won the “Red Dot: The Best of the Best” (the highest award of the International Red Dot Award) with the HM6 Space Pirate.
