New Panerai Luminor Marina Steel series

This iconic Italian watch is made of new (not so new…) materials.

Luminor and its Marina variants need no introduction. It is probably the most iconic watch produced by Officine, known for its cushion-shaped case, safety lock crown protection and sandwich dial. It has existed for decades and has hardly changed since then. Although the burly design will not shock anyone anymore, today some new references have joined the series. It is not a real new model, but uses what the brand calls “innovative metal”. This is the new Panerai Luminor Marina eSteel series-PAM01157, PAM01356 and PAM01358.

For good reasons, sustainable strategies and eco-friendliness are becoming the norm in all industries. Cars are becoming electric, and clothes are increasingly made from recycled materials. This trend has even begun to invade the watchmaking industry, and through a number of measures related to the protection of the ocean or parts of watches-mainly straps and packaging-are made of recycled materials. Today, Panerai launched a new series and announced with a bold statement “the mission of bringing more circular practices to the watchmaking world”.

As part of the 2021 replica Watch and Miracle series, Panerai launched a watch “made from recycled materials, equivalent to 58.4% of the total weight of the watch”, which uses a new classic Luminor Marina watch series. The idea is to develop a “recycled steel alloy” for the case, crown protection module and dial. The brand named it “one of the most remarkable technological achievements in the history of the brand”. Although the brand claims that this eSteel meets the same standards as a traditional stainless steel case, it is still up to you to judge the relevance of the brand statement.

Let us now focus on these three new references. In addition to this unprecedented alloy, the PAM01157, PAM01356 and PAM01358 are quite classic Luminor terminals, sharing most of the design elements and specifications with traditional stainless steel and other models of PAM01313. This means that the classic cushion-shaped case has a diameter of 44 mm and a height of 15.45 mm. Except for the polished bezel, most of it is brushed, with a trademark safety lock crown protector (also using eSteel) and 300 meters water resistance. . The crown itself is coated with rubber, and the color matches the dial.

In terms of dials, these Luminor Marinas share the typical Panerai sandwich structure design-meaning a two-plate structure, with the upper part hollowed out to display numbers/marks, and the lower part with Super-LumiNova coating. These new watches are available in three dial colors, all with a stylish gradient effect: Blu Profondo, Grigio Roccia and Verde Smeraldo-the latter is an exclusive version of the boutique. The gradient is not applied in the classic radial way, but applied from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock.

Inside the case, under the solid caseback, the new Panerai Luminor Marina eSteel model relies on one of the brand’s famous movements, the internal caliber P.9010. This automatic movement is equipped with two barrels and provides a comfortable 72-hour or 3-day power reserve. A practical feature of this movement is the quick setting of the hour hand, which can move forward or backward in units of one hour and adjust the date at the same time-especially useful when traveling.

The new PAM01157, PAM01356 and PAM01358 are all worn on a strap that matches the dial. The strap is made of recycled fabric and closed by an eSteel trapezoidal pin buckle. It also includes an extra strap and the box is also made of recycled materials.
