The first look of ORIS AQUIS GMT CARYSFORT REEF Limited Edition
Just this week, at a product show in Colorado, replica Oris announced a new limited edition Aquis GMT. It represents the first watch of the popular Swiss brand, which is their first watch made of 18kt gold. Only 50 pieces were produced, and three of them will be auctioned to directly support the Coral Restoration Foundation, with a focus on the Carisford Reef off Key Largo, Florida.
Carysfort Reef is the third largest reef in the world, the only reef in the United States, and a very popular recreational diving destination. Between climate change and the weakening of environmental regulations, coral reefs have undergone severe degradation-in the past 50 years, coral reefs have declined by as much as 98%. The Coral Reef Foundation is a non-profit organization that has developed a method to grow and transplant corals on a large scale that should help resist some of the damage that has already been done. By the end of 2020, they plan to transplant at least 30,000 individual corals onto the reef. The goal is to restore as many corals as possible while attracting attention. Oris and CRF joined forces to raise funds for the restoration, and the new Oris Aquis GMT Carysfort Reef limited edition was born.
Case material: 18 kt gold
Dial: Blue Sunburst
Size: 43.5 mm wide
Crystal: double dome sapphire with anti-reflection coating on the inside
Water resistance: 30 bar (300m)
Crown: tighten
Movement: Oris 798, Celita SW-330 base
Strap: blue leather, rubber coating, 18kt signature buckle
The Carysfort Reef limited edition is based on Oris’s existing Aquis GMT model. It has the same rock-solid specifications as the standard version, except that the case is made of exquisite 18kt gold. The case is waterproof to 300m, and the solid gold rotating bezel is set with black and blue ceramic inserts with 24-hour scale. There is a special case back on the back, which depicts the three types of coral planted by CRF on Carysfort Reef and the watch number (50 pieces in total). Behind the back cover, there is an Oris 798 movement based on Sellita SW-330, which is a main horse with GMT function.
What really stands out is the dark blue gradient dial, which perfectly matches the yellow tone of the case. On the outer edge of the dial, you will find twelve highly polished 18kt gold-plated hour markers with a series of simple pound signs every minute in the middle. Moving towards the center of the dial, a textured part with a 24-hour scale moves down slightly. In addition to the gradation, the center of the dial also has a subtle radial drawing pattern. When the watch is fixed under the light, it will glow with each change of angle.
On the wrist, the diameter of the Aquis GMT worn is smaller than its recommended 43.5mm. Because the lugs are bent downward, the distance between the lugs and the lugs feels significantly shorter than that of another watch of the same size. The lugs do not stick out of my 6.75 inch wrist, so it fits perfectly. There is a solid gold diver on his wrist, which is really a feeling. It shows a true yellow hue and perfectly complements the blue hue presented on the dial. I found that rubber coated leather is an interesting choice for watch straps because of its unique texture and wrist feel. It is flexible and comfortable, and I don’t think it needs a break-in period. If the watch is worn on a bracelet, I don’t think it will have the feel of a diving watch like a rubber strap. In addition, considering that the solid gold bracelet may bring a substantial increase in the price of the watch, it is a wise choice to consider the currency.
